What is Touch Therapy?
You may be familiar with the term 'touch therapy' as an American term for therapeutic massage, but I use the term to refer to a specialised way of working with people who have experienced a single trauma or a series of traumatic experiences which together constitute complex trauma. Examples of traumatic experiences include rape, sexual assault and physical or sexual abuse. Symptoms that can be helped by touch therapy include:
- Touch aversion
- Body image disturbances
- Low mood
- Anger
- Anxiety
- Sleep disturbances
Touch therapy combines gradual, gentle, non-invasive techniques that can be very effective in helping to reclaim your personal space and a sense of ease with your body following trauma.
Touch aversion may be only one part of a person's response to trauma. Some people may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression or an eating disorder as a response to the trauma they have experienced. Some people may self-harm through cutting or adopt addictive behaviours as a method of coping with what has happened to them.
Touch therapy is not psychotherapy or counselling and does not explore the psychological implications of your traumatic experience. For this reason, it is often advisable to seek professional psychological support for this aspect of your response to trauma.
